Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was born in Lombard, Illinois on November 17, 1958 to Mary Dominica and Frank Mastrantonio. She was raised in Oak Park, Illinois, by parents of Italian origin. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois.

Career

In 1983, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio made her screen debut as Gina Montana in the Al Pacino film ‘Scarface.’ The film was a critical hit, and Mastrantonio’s performance was praised. She made her television debut in 1985 with the miniseries ‘Mussolini: The Untold Tale.’

After that, she played Carmen in the film “The Color of Money.” She was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in the 1986 film, which proved to be her longest revelation in her career. She went on to appear in films such as “Slam Dance” (1987), “The January Man” (1989), and “The Abyss” (1989).

Mastrantonio starred as Maid Marian in the action movie “Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves” in 1991. Her performance won her a Saturn Award nomination in the category of Best Supporting Actress. ‘White Sands’ (1992), ‘Three Wishes’ (1995), and ‘Two Bits’ are among her other 1990s films (1995). 

She played Donna De Angelo in John Sayles’ drama film ‘Limbo’ in 1999. The film was a critical hit, earning her a nomination for Best Actress from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society. In the same year, she played Moira Pettigrew in the film “My Life So Far.”

After 2000, there was a significant drop in her movie career and she only appeared in three films: ‘The Perfect Storm’ (2000), ‘Standing Room Only’ (2003), and ‘Tabloid’ (2001). She continued to concentrate on the stage and began to perform on Broadway more regularly.

‘West Side Story’ (1980), ‘Copperfield’ (1981), ‘Man of La Mancha’ (2002), and ‘The Human Comedy’ are among her stage credits (1983). She performed in the plays ‘Henry V,’ ‘Measure for Measure,’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ at the New York Shakespeare Festival. 

She portrayed Jean Ellison in the television film “The Brooke Ellison Story” in 2001, which was based on a true story of an American politician. For this part, Mastrantonio received the Gracie Allen Award for Outstanding Female Lead in a Drama Special.

Personal Life

Since 1990, Mary Mastrantonio has been married to Pat O’Connor, an Irish director. Declan and Jack O’Connor are the couple’s two twins.

In the American police procedural series “Without a Trace,” she played Anne Cassidy on a regular basis. Between 2005 and 2006, she starred in nine episodes of the show.

Capt. Zoe Callas in ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ was her first major television appearance. She starred in 14 episodes of the critically acclaimed series and was lauded by many reviewers for her performance.

Her most recent ventures include starring appearances in the television shows “Blindspot” and “The Punisher.” ‘The Punisher,’ a Netflix version of a Marvel comic strip, was cancelled after two seasons owing to poor ratings. Mastrantonio portrays Madeline Burke in the NBC crime thriller series “Blindspot.” Sullivan Stapleton, Jaimie Alexander, and Audrey Esparza co-star alongside her. The show is now in its fourth season and has received mostly favourable feedback.
